How to Install A Fireplace Mantel From TS Manufacturing, The Mantel Shop

Tools required: Pencil, hammer, drill, belt sander, level and latex caulking.

Step 1. Turn valence upside down. Line up outside of columns with outside of valence. Using 1-1/2" screws, screw into valence with drill.

Step 2. Turn mantel upright and position in place making sure tile/marble showing is equal on both sides (see A)

Step 3. To ensure mantel surround meets wall and tile evenly, make a scribe line by placing pencil parallel with wall. Draw a pencil line along perimeter of mantel. Do the same along perimeter of mantel.

Step 4. Remove mantel from position and scribe to pencil line using the belt sander.

Step 5. Return mantel to original position. Check again to ensure mantel is flush with wall and tile on entire interior and exterior perimeter.

Step 6. Place level on top of mantel to ensure level. If mantel requires leveling, shim or belt sand appropriate side.

Step 7. Find 2 wall studs using stud finder. Drill 2 x 1/8" holes at 45 degree angle through top of mantel and into studs. Using 3" finishing nails, nail mantel to wall studs through the drill holes.

Step 8. Caulk around perimeter of mantel. Scrape off excess with putty knife. Fill nail holes with a putty stick., Wipe of excess. Your mantel is installed.

Note: Mantels should be finish painted before installation.
